The Long Flight Home! August 07, 2012

Why does the trip to the airport seem so short when you are going back home?
I should know better by now because it is this way when I leave all my kids, and poor Mark will have to deal with my sulking for a week or so but he is good natured and puts up with me.
Early this morning I got up and made banana bread for Maddie as a special treat when she got home from school.  I also left her a little card to go with it.  In addition to that I left a birthday card for Heather on her dresser, and told her she would find something on there when she got home.  I think she was a little disappointed when she asked if I'd left my green sweater for her and I told her no! lol
After our good byes Mark and I got our baggage checked and headed to our gate.
Savannah-Hilton Head International is a nice airport.  In some ways it reminds me a little of Columbia, SC's airport only bigger.
When Heather dropped us off the weather was hot and very humid, and the sky looked like thunderstorms.  Sure enough they were moving in by the time we boarded our flight and there was some uncertainty as to whether or not the weather would allow us to take off.
Although I didn't take these pictures of the airport and take off, this is really close to what the airport was looking like.
As they pushed us off the tarmac I looked out my window and there was lightning but they were pushing us out so I guess there was no need for worry!
Luckily the storm was behind us and not in front so we were able to take off for Detroit where we would have a 3 hour layover! Yuck!!  I remember thinking, can't we just go back and play with the girls?!
Welcome to Detroit!  Your stay will be about 3 hours!! Again, yuck...oh well, we thought maybe we could find some place decent to eat so off we went.
We found this great place called National Coney Island and their food was really good!  I had a loose meat sandwich, which is ground beef in a hot dog bun.  I would have liked it better without the mustard but I'll remember that the next time I go to Detroit.  Mark had really good chili fries but I don't remember what else he had, except lots of diet Coke as usual!!  Our server was super nice and she made it known that we could hang out there as long as we wanted after she found out we had a 3 hour layover!  We left her a nice tip!
When we returned to our gate this was the view awaiting us!
What a beautiful sunset!
Not long after I took this it was time to board our flight for home and look forward to our next great adventure!
